The second intervention of a lesser extent was carried out in October 2020 to eliminate residual shrubs that still compete with the existing trees.
In Palo Laziale, three different areas were chosen as suitable sites for creating new temporary ponds (habitat 3170*) and fresh-water spaces to favour recolonisation by species associated with these wet environments. The ponds were designed following existing manuals and toolkits, such as those implemented by the “Million Ponds Project” (www.freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/projects/million-ponds) (Figure 10 in Annex Action C.2). According to the topographic and soil analysis, suitable areas were identified as appropriate for the retention of rainwater (Action A.2, Action A.3). The vegetation covering the three identified areas was removed first, and the excavation and handling of the soil carried out using a crawler tractor equipped with an excavator.
